Founding Agent of Compass Denver Jessica Northrop joined Darik Tolnay on his Father Alchemist Podcast to talk about family, success, business and mindset, and the steps she has taken in her career and personal life to get to where she is today.
Reflecting on her career in real estate Jessica said, “I say the more successful you are in real estate, the better of a human being you are because of what you are forced to go through and the types of people that you're forced to be around. There's like a joke in the industry where, you're a realtor, a lender, and you're a psychologist. Because we get intimate with people and I think that it takes a certain type of grit.”

Among other notable quotes…
On juggling a family and career:
“I remember my daughter, Morgan. I'd be sitting at a kitchen table on my computer, and she'd be standing behind me on the chair, looking over my shoulder. And I always say my kid's first words were 303-525-0200. They all know my phone number. A lot of times, I did integrate my kids as much as I could into my business. They sat in a lot of cars. Even to this day, my 24-year-old was just with me not too long ago. I said, ‘Hey, I'm just got to run in.’ And then 50 minutes later, I come out, she's sweating in the car. She's like, ‘Not again!' How many times have they been left in the car? A few too many.”
On advice for those wanting to get into real estate:
“I think a big mistake that a lot of agents make is thinking ‘I'm just going to get in real estate and you can make a lot of money and it’s Selling Sunset and taking a picture in a Lamborghini and all things. I think you have to have money to invest in your business and track what you're doing every single day. Are you working 50, 60 hours a week? You don't get paid for a while. I think that that's a big, it's a thing. You're going to do a lot of stuff for free. Are you doing three and four open houses if you have to? Are you adding people to your database? It's a grind. You have to have a system. You have to be willing to work and literally work.”
On communication throughout a transaction with clients and other agents:
“People just need to be heard. They just need to get it out of their system, and I'll let people get it out of their system a lot more, and then try to have a lot more empathy and work through it that way versus having to be right all the time. A lot of times people just need to be heard. So whether it's a client or another agent or whatever it may be, let's find a solution and just let people be heard.”
On gratitude and giving back:
"We still grind. We still like to win. Sometimes we don't. Where I am mentally with business is I want to run a good business. I want to do the best that I can. But it's important to me to give back and to feel fulfilled. I’m connected with Giveback Homes and I would tell someone to find something that you can also give back, because you can have this supposed success. A lot of times when you get to that supposed success, it's like, ‘this is all that's here.’ It's not, then you're always still chasing a lot. Anytime I’m feeling like 'this is what it’s all about or it’s too much,' I really like to try to refocus. It’s really fulfilling for me and we can give back to the community that way.”
